*Was Jatayu human in Ramayana?*

Saddened after Ravana abducted Sita, Lord Rama along with his brother Lakshmana searched for Sita in the wilderness.  At that time he saw there *a Jatayu bird (vulture ) screaming in an injured state*. Jatayu informed Sri Rama that Ravana took Sita in a chariot (plane) flying from the sky and went to the south direction and Jatayu died in blood and flesh. This it is written in Valmiki Ramayana Aranyakanda Sarg No. 68, Rama gave him Urdhvodehik and Pindadana (rituals after death) *

🚩एवमुक्त्वा चितां दीप्तामारोप्य पतगेश्वरम् ।

ददाह रामो धर्मात्मा स्वबन्धुमिव दुःखितः ॥ ३१ ॥ 🚩

Due to this, Dharmatma Sri Ramachandra was saddened and placed the body of Pakshiraja on the pyre and cremated it like his brother's rites by setting fire to it.

🚩रामोऽथ सहसौमित्रिर्वनं गत्वा स वीर्यवान् ।

स्थूलान् हत्वा महारोहीननुतस्तार तं द्विजम् ॥ ३२ ॥🚩

🚩रोहिमांसानि चोद्धृ्त्य पेशीकृत्य महायशाः ।

शकुनाय ददौ रामो रम्ये हरितशाद्वले ॥ ३३ ॥ 🚩

Then the mighty Sri Rama along with Lakshmana went to the forest and brought huge Maharohi (kandamool special) and spread the darbha (kush) on the earth with the intention of offering them to Jatayu. The great Lord Rama removed the gar of Rohi and made it into a pinda and *offered pinda to Jatayu* on those beautiful green buds. 

🚩यत् यत् प्रेतस्य मर्त्यस्य कथयन्ति द्विजातयः ।

तत्स्वर्गगमनं पित्र्यं तस्य रामो जजाप ह ॥ ३४ ॥ 🚩

Lord Sri Ram chanted all the *prayer related mantras* which the Brahmin people say is necessary for the purpose of attaining heaven for a person living in the afterlife.

Taking into account the meaning of all the above people, it can be seen that *Prabhu Sri Ramachadra cremated Jatayu, offered him Pindadana, offered him tilanjali, jalanjali and bathed in Godavari for purification.* This means that *Jatayu must be a human being and not a bird. Funeral rites for humans. And other rituals are mentioned in our scriptures*.  It is not believed that Prabhu Sri Ramachandra would perform funeral and then Pindada etc. for one party.  We have a *tribal tribe wearing a variety of picture strange costumes. Thus it is possible that Jatayu wore a vulture-like garment.* Jatayu fought Ravana with a winged garment and was wounded and died in it when Ravana cut off his wings.  There are some more verses in Ramayana which confirm the statement that *Jatayu should not be a bird but a human being*.  We will see that.

 *Kishkindha Kand Sarg no.  60 clearly mentions the human forms of Sampati and Jatayu.* Sampati, the elder brother of Jatayu, comes to the ashram of a certain Nishankar Rishi, *Nishankar Rishi* calls Sampati -

🚩सौम्य वैकल्यतां दृष्ट्‍वा रोम्णां ते नावगम्यते ।

अग्निदग्धाविमौ पक्षौ प्राणाश्चापि शरीरके ॥ १८ ॥🚩

He said - 'Soumya!  Your hair has fallen out and both wings have been burned.  The reason for this is not known.  In spite of all this life has survived in your body.

🚩गृध्रौ द्वौ दृष्टपूर्वौ मे मातरिश्वसमौ जवे ।

गृध्राणां चैव राजानौ भ्रातरौ कामरूपिणौ ॥ १९ ॥🚩

I have previously seen two vultures as fast as the air.  They were both brothers and shapeshifters at will.  At the same time, he was the king of Gridhas (The King of Vultures ) 

Here *Sampati and Jatayu could change their form at will.* That is, they could change the *vulture-like garb they were wearing.*

🚩ज्येष्ठोऽवितस्त्वं संपाते जटायुरनुजस्तव ।

*मानुषं रूपमास्थाय* गृह्णीतां चरणौ मम ॥ २० ॥🚩

 I have known you. You are the elder of the two brothers. Jatayu was your younger brother. Both of you *take human form and touch my feet.*

Here Maharishi Valmiki has clearly written that *Sampati and Jatayu could assume human form because they were human.The truth is written in Ramayana and that is what I am telling you here.  I do not say anything about myself.* We will know more about Jatayu in the next article.

 *Note: I have expressed the above opinion while studying Ramayana from a scientific point of view.  Not everyone will agree with my opinion.*

 *In the discourses of the Ramayana only the story of Rama is told.  It is our tragedy that the scientific references in Ramayana do not come to light because science is not mentioned in it.*
