*Scientific refferences in Mahabharata - Part - 1*
There are many scientific references at various places in the Mahabharata written by Vyasa. You must know that many scientific weapons were used in the crusades that took place in Mahabharata. In this series of articles, we are going to study the scientific references scattered in various chapters in the Mahabharata. Let us read the first article today.
Bhishma Pitamah told Dharmaraja Yudhishthira the dialogue between *Brhaspati and Manu*. That dialogue is recorded by Maharshi Vyas in Mahabharata and is mentioned in *Chapter No. 203*. Let's see the explanation on it.
*Mahabharata Shanti Parva, Mokshadharma Parva* In chapter 203, verse no. 15 to verse no. 23, the moon, sun and celestial phenomena are well described as related to mind, body and spirit. We will see its meaning.
🚩
यथा चन्द्रो ह्यमावस्यामलिङ्गत्वान्न दृश्यते |
न च नाशोsस्य भवति तथा विद्धि शरीरिणम् ||१५||
🚩
On Amavasya Tithis the moon is not visible due to lack of light, but its existence does not perish, the moon does not perish. Similarly, even though the soul is invisible (not visible), it exists. It has to be accepted.
क्षीणकोशो ह्यमावस्यां चन्द्रमा न प्रकाशते |
तद्वन्मूर्तिविमुक्तोsसौ शरीरी नोपलभ्यते ||१६||
On Amavasya Tithi, the moon moves away from its position of light, not visible in the sky. Similarly, when the embodied soul leaves the body, it becomes invisible, invisible to the eyes.
It is an astronomical theory that a new moon cannot be seen but exists. *(ama -,together and vas \ vas - to live ) = Amavasya.* On this tithi the sun and moon are in close proximity to each other so the moon is not visible on the night of amavasya.* Sun and moon are living together. The closeness of Sun and Moon should be called Amavasya. This astronomical theory was known to us during Mahabharata.

यथाSSकाशान्तरं प्राप्य चन्द्रमा भ्राजते पुनः |
तद्वल्लिङ्गान्तरं प्राप्य शरीरी भ्राजते पुनः ||१७ ||

Again the same moon appears on the other side of the sky and shines again. In this way the soul manifests again by assuming another body.
It is said that the soul is immortal, indestructible and leaves one body and enters another body. Although it seems to be a philosophical verse, there is a great astronomical truth hidden in it. It says that *the moon appears in another sky.* That is, when it is day in India, it is night in America or in some other countries it is night. The real moon neither sets nor rises, it stays where it is. But, *Due to Earth's rotation (rotation around itself) we see days, nights and other celestial phenomena*
Also it rises in another country i.e. *a country on earth like America* Now tell me that since Mahabharata happened in our India, the geographical situation of the countries on the opposite side of India was also known at the time of Mahabharata, that is why the sages described it here accurately and correctly.
🚩
जन्म वृद्धिः क्षयश्चास्य पारत्यक्षेणोपलभ्यते |
सा तु चान्द्रमसी वृत्तिर्न तु तस्य शरीरिणः ||१८ ||
🚩
The various phases of the moon that we see are not caused by the moon because the moon is steady. *This means that the Earth rotates around itself and the Earth rotates around the Sun was known in Mahabharata.* That is, we knew this before Western scientists.
Similarly birth happens to the body. Not of the soul. Because the soul is imperishable, immortal. That's why you should never pay homage to the deceased. It should be said as *Homage to the soul or spirit of the deceased.
In short, our *Vedic culture had many repositories of knowledge. But the Macaulay style of education made all this information obsolete and stamped Indians as backward.* Our tragedy is that we are forgetting our original culture, its scientific context, history and our universal Sanskrit language while promoting English education. *We will see more scientific references in the next article.*
*In the discourses of the Mahabharata only the story of Kaurava's and Pandav's is told. It is our tragedy that the scientific references in Mahabharata do not come to light*
Thanks for reading this article. Will meet on next Wednesday with another interesting subject from Mahabharata
